2004-01-26 - 2:30 p.m. Yesterday, I had The Hangover From Hell (THFH). Of course, having THFH implies that I at least had fun the night before, which I did. Anton* came over, and after watching a movie, we went out with Twitchy (as our other roomie, Frog, was gone for the weekend) and her friend to a former housemate’s friend’s party. And we had just about as good a time as one would think, especially since it was approximately -1 000 000 degrees outside. So we left around 12.30 and came home and proceeded with the drinkening. By the way, have you ever tried playing the guitar while drunk? It’s actually not that bad. Or, more likely, I was too far gone to realize how bad it probably sounded. But whatever. We called it a night around 3.30, Anton went home, Twitchy’s friend decided to crash on the floor, and I began feeling quite ill. Twitchy was very good and looked after me as I emptied my system of absolutely everything and finally fell asleep. When I woke up a few hours later, THFH reared its ugly head. Mind you, I’ve only been hung over once before, and I only had a major headache, none of this horrible nausea and general feeling of wanting to die. Of course, my mom decided to call me and see how I was doing and while I told her that I wasn’t feeling well, I denied allegations that I was suffering due to any actions or drinks imbibed the night before (she knew that I had gone out, but I had given no indications that I would have been drinking). I finally climbed back into bed and slept for a few hours and woke up fine. However, THFH has taught me to never drink on an empty stomach, and to probably avoid alcohol for a little while.I just realized a few days ago why my Russian Foreign Policy prof looks so familiar. He’s a dead ringer for one of my great-uncles. They could be twins. They even talk the same way. Strange.Classes are going well. The only thing that sucks is that it’s so goddamn cold. I’m wearing two pairs of everything, and I’m still freezing when I go outside. We’ve finally gotten into the double digits for the most part, but with the wind chill it’s in the negative double digits (well, not all the time, but it’s definitely below 0). And the wind never stops here. I put my flannel sheets on my bed, which helps some at night, but even with our heater running all day it’s still a bit chilly at times. I wouldn’t mind it so much if there were some snow on the ground, but I think it’s reached the point where it’s just too cold to snow.Yesterday was my godson’s (aka The Cutest Baby On The Planet) birthday. TCBOTP turned 2. Ah yes, the Terrible Twos. Well, since he’s autistic it probably won’t be too bad. Last I heard, he’s operating about a year behind where he should be. My parents went up to see the family over the weekend and my aunt was talking about how they’re going to start the therapy in February (and one of my other aunts, who lives around the corner, is going to be one of the therapists, which is cool). It’s good that they got the diagnosis so early and are able to start the therapy. Plus, he doesn’t look to have a severe case; he was playing with a new toy appropriately and playing tag with his sister (who’s 3), and he even joined in the chorus of “Old McDonald” without anyone trying to make him sing, he just did it all on his own.I know I’ve said it before, but one of the reasons I really love my (extended) family is that when there’s a problem, everyone comes together to help. When we first realized that TCBOTP wasn’t behaving quite as normally as he should have been, my uncles and my aunt (all of them doctors) were able to talk and get the name of the best doctor to get a diagnosis from, and one of my aunts (a psychologist who does autism therapy and diagnosis as her main practice) gave advice as to which therapy to do and who to call. We are a clannish people, and while everyone tends to live in each other’s lives a bit, it’s good.Speaking of family, I took pictures of all my cousins (on my mom’s side) over break and I finally got them developed. They’re now posted all over my desk and bookshelf, in order of age of course, since I’m that anal sometimes. Anyways, it’s nice to be working at my computer and look at all my cute little cousins (there are 10 of them, ranging from 13yrs old to 2). They are a cute bunch, if I do say so myself.Tomorrow has been designated Apply for a Passport Day. If I hope to study in France next year, I’ll be needing a passport to get in and out of various countries. Plus, I’ve never had a passport before and it’s annoying to carry my birth certificate around. I would have gotten it a few weeks ago, but of course right at the beginning of school, I had a giant outbreak of fever blisters (of death) and I thought it best for me to wait to get my passport pictures done when I didn’t look so diseased (or attacked by rabid weasels).I also finally got off my lazy ass and went to Chinatown and got myself a copy of Hero , which is the best. Movie. Ever. It’s this epic Chinese movie (I don’t think it ever got released in the States) about the formation of China. It’s a great story, but what really makes it is the cinematography. Certain parts of the movie are shown more than once, since different people have different ideas of how certain events happened, and each person’s version is signified by a color scheme. One version is all red, while another in blue, another in green and the last in white. The use of color and the way the scenes are shot are just breathtaking. The movie is kind of like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in that there are a lot of fighting scenes and people fly around, but on the whole, this movie is so much better. If you can find it, watch it. Then watch it again with all your friends. Only thing is that the whole thing is in Chinese, so you have to figure out how to put on the English subtitles. Once you get that all straightened out though, prepare to be amazed. Go, watch, and enjoy.*10 points for you if you guessed that's not his real name
