2004-02-12 - 7:04 p.m. Nothing much going on lately. Classes still going, V-day coming up…yeah. I had a fencing tournament last Sunday. It went alright I suppose; I know I could be doing better, but whenever I’m on the strip, I seem to lose it. Part of it is because I suck, but I think another big part of it is for some reason, I just lose it mentally. In bouts to 5, I really don’t have a lot of time to think and figure out what the other girl is doing. It would be one thing if this were epee, but sabre just goes so fast, I barely know what’s happened by the time an attack lands. I know I’m just a beginner and that I’ll get better, but I really want to be doing better now. And I know it sounds petty (because it is), but I’d really like to have better stats than another beginner on the team. All of us are really tight, which is great, but no matter how many times I can beat her in practice, she still does better on the strip, which is where it really counts. We’re fencing the same people at competitions, so it’s not like she’s just going up against easier opponents. I don’t know…I suppose I’ll get everything in gear eventually. When I’m in France next year, I’m planning on continuing with fencing, and I’ve heard that the program will really improve my technique, so hopefully I’ll come back senior year much improved. So it’s Valentine’s Day this Saturday, and for the first time in history, Emmielouhoo has someone to celebrate it with! And there was much rejoicing. Actually, since I have fencing on Saturday, and he has martial arts, we’re going to celebrate mostly on Friday. Saturday is also his 21st birthday though, so that will have to be given proper attention. And then on Sunday, his parents are coming up to celebrate his birthday. I’m supposedly going to lunch and a movie with them, so that’ll be interesting. Not so much of a formal presentation, but still a presentation. Also, apparently he hasn’t introduced any of his other friends from school to them, so I’m the first friend, let alone girlfriend, that his parents will be meeting. Hopefully this will all go well.
